ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jan Rybníček (b. 1988) lives and works in Munich. He studied Fine Arts in Brno and Lisbon before studying painting under Markus Oehlen at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, where he graduated in 2019.
His paintings are inhabited by enigmatic, anthropomorphic beings whose bodies resist clear definition. Fragmented, multiplied or partially concealed, they merge with one another and with the surrounding pictorial space. Working intuitively and associatively, Rybníček creates layered compositions in which bodies form shifting relationships and possible narratives remain unresolved.
Rybníček’s work explores interpersonal relationships and inner experiences with a particular sensitivity to ambiguity. An interest in mysticism and the irrational meets a distinct sense of irony, allowing different meanings to coexist within the same image.
